Another Wednesday and more What the Hell moments. Post your rant and head over to Blue Monkey Butt to link up.
So. We finally got the snow we've (I've) been hoping for. Kids were already out of school Friday and Monday for end of Semester. Imagine my surprise when I received a phone call Sunday afternoon stating "due to inclement weather, school will be closed on Monday." What the hell? Someone royally screwed that one up. Now it's Wednesday and No School still. Apparently since the snow melts some during the day and then re-freezes at night, it's too dangerous for the kids to go to school. I also heard that some of the schools still have ice in their parking lots and on their sidewalks. The city hasn't made it out to clear them and the school's don't have the manpower to clear it themselves. I'd think the employees that are going in could each take a handful of salt and throw it down. Just saying...
I usually work one day a week. Recently it has been on Saturdays. I was scheduled this Saturday (When all the snow was falling) and next Saturday according to the schedules posted last week when I was in. I did say I could work both weekend days, but was only scheduled the one. As I was leaving on Saturday, I happened to stop in the office to get my check. I looked at the schedule posted there and realized I was working Sunday. What the Hell? Maybe it's just me. I'm thankful to have the work but 15 hours just isn't enough time for me to wrap my mind around working...when I thought I wasn't...and there's snow. I did it. It was fine. And thankfully the snow was still here on Monday.
I took the kids sledding for the first time yesterday. The problem living in a place that rarely sees snow is that when it does snow there isn't a sled to be found anywhere. Proof of this is the multiple inflatable tubes we sold over the weekend at the boat store. People were paying $100 to have something to sled on. What the Hell? We used laundry baskets. The kids had a blast and I even turn a turn down the hill. If anyone out there had a camcorder and recorded me going down the hill...in a laundry basket...ERASE IT NOW. You've been warned.

The problem with living in a place where it snows frequently is they don't care if you have to take your life into your hands, they expect you to get the kids to school anyway. This morning it is all, it's only three inches, go outside, dig your car out and get those kids here!
I know you don't get snow that often, must be loads of fun for you and the kids. Up here, we get 12" overnight and school buses are still on time in the morning.
Growing up, we used the aluminum lids of the garbage cans or old cardboard boxes for sledding.
I live in NH, and we always see snow. They hardly ever cancel school, and apparently even though we got a ton of snow, people still don't know how to drive in it! That is a really good idea to use a laundry basket though!
Thanks so much for joining us today!
Cassie~
I'm originally from Mi so the cancelation of school floors me. We walked to school in grade school. 9/10ths of a mile. To school, home and back for lunch, and home again after school....in the snow.
Joeshico~ Nobody had sleds, Lots of plastic lids and such.
Stacy~ Drive in it? I thinkthat's why school closes. It's not that they can't...they WON'T.
We get a lot of snow and the town still can't handle it. We have a lot of delayed openings and early closings (fewer actual snow days). I can't believe how long the schools have been closed down south. We usually go for at most a day. Although with the grocery store mobs, you would think we were going to get snowed in for weeks. Glad you enjoyed the snow and I would love to see a video of you sliding down the hill in a laundry basket.
I wanna go sledding now! I remember poor kids (me) going down on garbage bags. Using laundry baskets is rather clever.
As long as the hill is relatively small. You don't want him going down a super luge or anything cuz he is still small and his lack of weight can launch him too far into the air if anything freak accident happened.
